Description

Learning to scuba dive requires both knowledge development – including facts, principles and concepts – and dive skills including techniques and methods. PADI Open Water Diver uses videos, audio, graphics and reading to help you learn, plus short quizzes that let you gauge your progress, and then offers a review of anything you happen to miss.

You develop dive skills during actual dives with an experienced  PADI Instructor at your Herts Dive Club. By completing knowledge development online, you’re ready to meet with your instructor and start having fun in the water.

During the PADI Open Water Diver course, you’ll learn what you need to know to explore the underwater world using scuba. Most people find it a rewarding challenge.

The PADI Open Water Diver course includes three parts: Knowledge Development, Confined Water Dives, and Open Water Dives. Knowledge Development covers the principles, concepts and terms you need to know for dive safety and enjoyment. During the Confined Water Dives, you learn and practice scuba skills in a pool or water with pool-like conditions. You’ll enjoy making one or more minidives, which take you through the same steps you follow when you make open water dives. To complete training you practice, apply and demonstrate what you learn during four Open Water Dives at a local dive site.

Earning a PADI Open Water Diver certification shows that you met the course requirements. Dive centers and resorts require proof of certification before they will rent scuba equipment, fill scuba cylinders or book dive excursions. As a PADI Open Water Diver, you’ll be trained to a maximum depth of 18 metres/60 feet, and are qualified to dive in conditions as good as, or better than, those in which you trained. It’s just the beginning of a lifetime filled with dive adventures.

How does it work?

You can start learning immediately with Open Water Diver eLearning. Complete Open Water Diver eLearning independently at your own pace before class: Read, interact, watch and self-assess your learning by answering exercise questions after each topic and completing section Knowledge Reviews and quizzes, along with a final exam. Be sure to ask your instructor if you have any questions as you learn.

Your instructor will provide a schedule for the inwater portion of the course. Be sure to arrive for your confined water dives with your personal equipment – mask, fins and snorkel – adjusted and ready. Your instructor or dive center staff can help you with your gear. Treat the confined water dives as practice open water dives; everything you learn has a real-world purpose in diving. By the time you go on your first open water scuba dive, you’ll have mastered the basic skills you need. Your instructor will continue to help you develop and refine your abilities during four open water dives at a local site suitable for beginning divers. You’ll learn a lot but will also have a lot of fun.

The course is paced to help you become a confident and capable diver – so enjoy each step. You pay for the training, but you earn the certification.
