What is the open water scuba course?
The Open Water Diver Course is the most widely recognised beginner-level scuba certification offered by diving agencies such as PADI, SSI, or NAUI. Once you’re certified, you’ll be able to dive to depths of 18 metres (or 12 metres if you’re under 15) with a buddy anywhere in the world. You can either complete the course over a few days while on holiday or split it up across weekends if you’re doing it closer to home.
What’s included in the course?
There are three main parts to an Open Water Scuba Course:

This is where you’ll learn the basics—how pressure affects your body, how scuba gear works, and what to do in emergencies. You can usually do this online at your own pace.

Confined Water Dives
These take place in a swimming pool or calm, shallow water. You’ll practise essential scuba skills like mask clearing, regulator recovery, and buoyancy control.

Open Water Dives
This is where the magic happens! You’ll complete four open water dives (usually over two days), where you’ll demonstrate what you’ve learned and start to feel more comfortable in the ocean.
Scuba diving equipment: What you’ll need
Most dive schools will provide everything you need for the course. This typically includes:
- Wetsuit or drysuit (depending on location)
- Buoyancy control device (BCD)
- Regulator
- Fins and mask
- Dive computer or depth gauge
If you plan to dive regularly, you may want to invest in scuba diving equipment eventually, especially a mask and fins that fit you properly.
Should I bring a GoPro for scuba diving?
Absolutely—if you’ve got one! A GoPro for scuba diving is perfect for capturing your underwater experience, especially during open-water dives. Just ensure it’s in a proper, waterproof housing and securely attached. You’ll want to focus on your skills during the course, but grabbing a few clips of your first fish or reef moment is always worth it.

Is it hard to pass?

Can I take the course if I’m not a strong swimmer?
